Faith in Action
Introduction
In the last devotion we looked at Hebrews chapter 11. Now we see the word ‘Therefore’ is used to connect chapter 11 with chapter 12 of Hebrews. Chapter 11 tells about those who have gone before; they have finished the race. Their stories are intended to prepare us for running by faith. They show that God will always see us through, no matter what difficulties we face.
Reflect
- So we’re surrounded by great examples of those who have run by faith. Now we are encouraged to throw off two types of things that stop us running our best. What are they and what is the difference between them?
- The word for ‘perseverance’ used here means ‘having a blazing hope in the midst of adversity’. Think about someone mentioned in chapter 11 or someone you know about who models this to you.
- What do the words ‘the race marked out for us’ tell us about God and his plan for our lives?
How does knowing that God has marked out your life’s race encourage you – especially when you face difficulties?
Reflect
- According to this verse, what is the reason should we fix our eyes on Jesus? What are some of the ways we can do this?
- What enabled Jesus to endure the agony and shame of the cross?
- What do you think is the significance of Jesus sitting down at the right hand of the throne of God?
Jesus is both our perfect example and the one who enables us to run the race of faith. The Hebrew Christians wanted to go back to the familiarity and safety of Judaism. But the writer encourages them to keep looking ahead by faith.
Reflect
- Jesus endured so much in order to bring us salvation. How is this intended to encourage us to persevere when times are tough?
Jesus looked past the shame and agony of the cross to the joy that lay ahead.

Why does being future-focused as Christians help us live well in the present? Perhaps you could read these verses with a friend and then pray together, asking the Lord to help you stay focused on him.
